Faculty and Staff Developing Novel Plant Breeding Teaching Curriculum for Africa Win 2019 CALS Team Award

Dr. Shui-zhang Fei is a member of the winning team for CALS’ Team Award in 2019.  The award is a recognition of the interdisciplinary team’s achievement in growing the emerging African seed industry through the training of skilled plant breeding professionals.  The team received a large grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work with colleagues at three major African Universities, University of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa,  Makerere University in Uganda and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana to develop state-of-the art e-modules covering modern breeding approaches and technologies for training M.S. students, and to implement novel teaching methods.

The project was led by Dr. Walter Suza in Agronomy and involved ISU faculty from Agronomy, Agricultural Education Studies, Curriculum and Instruction, Horticulture and Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.  Dr. Fei played a major role in developing e-modules and applied learning activities related to crop genetics.
