Department of Horticulture, Graduate Seminar – Effects of Smooth Crabgrass and White Clover Populations on Athletic Field Safety

Speaker: Thomas Donelan, Grad Student - Department of Horticulture, Iowa State University

Topic summary:  “Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) and white clover (Trifolium repens) are both common weeds on athletic turfgrass. Both species are known to lower turfgrass quality, increase the risk of athlete injury, and decrease turf playability. In this experiment, various populations of both species will be examined under simulated traffic to determine what the population threshold is in order to limit the risks associated with controlling each species and ensuring turf quality.”
