Alum of the Month: Chris Hickman, Golf Course Superintendent, The Falls at Grand Falls Casino and Golf Resort

Chris Hickman graduated in Horticulture in May 2006.  Chris is from Larchwood, Iowa.

Chris’s major job responsibilities since being hired, initially he was responsible for overseeing the construction and grow-in phases of the 18 hole Golf Course.  He is now responsible for everything associated with the maintenance of the golf course and resort grounds.  This includes 200 acres of manicured turf and just over an acre of landscape beds.

We asked Chris what he likes most about his position.  I enjoy the fact that no two days are alike in the business.  Everyday we are challenged in a new way, and it is up to our team to figure out a way to be successful.  At the end of the day, your hard work is easily recognizable.

Following is the advice Chris offers to current students:  Be careful when selecting internships.  The biggest names don’t always guarantee a valuable experience.  Make sure that you are going somewhere that will benefit your future.  When you get there, ask all the questions you can think of.
