Clubs
Students are encouraged to participate in additional extra-curricular activities and clubs and many students are active in leadership opportunities. Horticulture students practice leadership skills in Horticulture Club, Turf Club, Ag Council and in the many extra-curricular clubs and organizations on campus.
Through the departmental clubs, Horticulture Club and Turf Club, students gain knowledge about internships, job skills, the professional network of colleagues, and socially get connected. Both clubs provide community-service learning opportunities. The students attend state and national commodity group conferences and participate in seminars and trade shows at each of the events. Both clubs have representation on the Agriculture Student Council of the College of Agriculture and are valid organizations within the Government of the Student Body of Iowa State University.
Hort Club Members Attend Mid-Am
On January 17-18, 2007, seven students from Hort Club attended the annual Mid-America Horticultural Fair and Trade Show. Mid-Am is perhaps the largest green industry show of its kind in the Midwest and one of the larger shows in the entire country. Hundreds of exhibitors ranging from nurseries to landscapers to allied trade services fill the exhibit hall at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago to showcase their offerings. In addition to attending the trade show, the students also participated in the Student Career Fair where potential employers meet with students to discuss job and internship opportunities.

Those students attending were: (From left to right:) Bryce

A Note from Brad Johnson, Turf Club President Regarding Turf Club Activites for 2007-08:
It is a busy time for the Turf Club with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Conference just around the corner. Over twenty members will be attending the conference February 22-24, 2007 in Anaheim, California. During the conference turf club members will participate in educational seminars, job fairs, and also compete in the 13th annual collegiate turf bowl competition, as Iowa State looks to repeat for the sixth time in a row in the competition. As one group of turf club members are anticipating their conference, another group just returned from theirs. Seven members attended the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Conference in San Antonio, January 18-20, 2007. During their time at the conference members were able to attend a trade show, seminars, and also compete in the 3rd annual student challenge competition. Iowa State placed 2nd out of 26 teams, getting edged out by the University of Tennessee.
