The Department of Horticulture maintains a strong scholarship program through our alumni donations and the ISU Foundation donation accounts. The horticulture scholarships provided by our Department of Horticulture scholarship program are significant and play a major role in scholastic awards. In addition, many of our students compete successfully for national scholarship awards. The Department of Horticulture awards approximately $65,000 to $70,000 to our students on an annual basis.
The university Financial Aid Office assists students with grants and loans and university-wide scholarships. The College of Agriculture administers both entering and upper-class scholarships for which our horticulture students compete effectively considering the donor's restrictions.
In addition to scholarships and awards based on merit and/or financial need, students have excellent student-work opportunities on campus and in the local community. Students work in research laboratories and at ISU horticulture-related facilities, such as the Horticulture Research Station, Veenker Golf Course, Jack Trice Stadium, and Reiman Gardens. Many students work part-time at local garden centers, nurseries, golf courses, gardens, and orchards to assist in earning money for college costs. The local central Iowa industries are supportive of our students.
