Option: Greenhouse Operations & Management
During the spring and summer of 2008, I worked at Holub’s Greenhouse and Garden Center located in Ames, IA. I worked in the wholesale part of the business where my tasks ranged from pulling wholesale orders, taking deliveries, transplanting, pinching, taking cuttings, and the everyday greenhouse duties such as watering/fertilizing, to cleaning, moving, and spacing plants. I would recommend working at Holub’s to any new or young horticulture major interested in greenhouse operations because Holub’s is a smaller company which means one can take part in many tasks and not just do the same thing every day. I also really liked the people I worked with, making the work environment more enjoyable. Both the Greenhouse Manager/Head Grower, Lee and the Assistant Grower, Anita received their Horticulture Degrees from Iowa State, so it is always great to talk to them and relate to their experiences at Iowa State.
