Course Description:
This course will acquaint students with hardy and tender
perennials, groundcovers, annuals, ornamental grasses, bulbs,
herbs, and roses grown in Iowa through a variety of instructional
methods. Knowledge of nomenclature, plant characteristics,
culture, and maintenance will be applied in actual settings as well
as in design opportunities.
There is a $15 field trip fee for this
course.
Goals:
Students will be able to identify and correctly name a variety of herbaceous ornamentals grown in Iowa and throughout the Midwest. During laboratory sessions, students will have an opportunity to practice hands-on approaches to planting and maintaining herbaceous plants.
Expected Outcomes:
After successfully completing Hort. 330, each student will be able to:
- Identify and write correctly the scientific name of more than 200 herbaceous ornamentals
- List and describe common maintenance techniques used to keep herbaceous ornamentals thriving in Midwestern landscapes
- Recognize and evaluate common pests and other problems with herbaceous ornamentals
- Recommend appropriate control measures for common problems
- Compare and analyze the accuracy and importance of information from various sources for consumers of herbaceous ornamentals
- Design perennial beds cooperatively with class members using the plants learned
- Show and defend the group perennial design project to class members
- Design an annual carpet bedding scheme using the plants learned
- Research and report on the identifying characteristics of an annual plant to other class members
Special Note:
Students with any specials needs or special accommodations need to make arrangements to see me at the beginning of the semester or as soon as possible. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) from the Disability Resources (DR) office (515-294-6642). DR is located in Room 1076 of the Student Services Building.
Course Requirements:
Exams:
No make-up exams will be given, except for death in the family,
serious illness, severe weather, or at the discretion of the
instructor.
3 exams (1 hour each) and 1 final exam (1 hour) are worth 100
points each. Exams will cover material presented in lecture,
labs, and required text. The final exam is cumulative.
ID Quizzes:
No make-up quizzes will be given. Eight identification quizzes are scheduled during labs. The lowest score of the 8 scheduled quizzes will be dropped. Each quiz will contain 10 plant specimens or photos to be identified. Students will correctly record the genus (2 points), specific epithet (2 points), and common name (1 point), for a total of 5 points per plant (50 points per quiz). Correct spelling is required. Quizzes are cumulative.
Final ID Quizzes:
No makeup identification finals will be given. 2 final plant quizzes (125 points each) are scheduled during labs. Each final quiz, one on perennials and one on annuals, will contain 25 specimens or photos to identify. Scoring will be identical to weekly plant identification quizzes.
Perennial Project and Presentation:
Working in groups, students will create a garden design using perennial plants presented in this course and then present the design to the class during a lab session. (125 points)
Annual Design Project:
Working individually, students will create an annual carpet bedding design using the annual plants presented in this course. (50 points)
Annual Presentation
Working in pairs, students will research an annual of his/her choice and present a 5-minute lesson on the identification characteristics and culture of the selected annual during a class session. (25 points)
Extra Credit:
Extra credit opportunities will be offered to all class members throughout the semester. In addition, scores from "bonus plants" on identification quizzes can be used as extra credit.
