Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines for Landscaping

Goals

Students who complete Horticulture 240 will

  1. be able to identify by sight numerous taxa of woody plants important in the Midwest and indicative of taxa used elsewhere,
  2. pronounce and write botanical and common names correctly,
  3. understand the primary determinants of whether a particular woody plant is suitable for a certain site in the landscape,
  4. know terminology related to plant identification and usage of landscape plants,
  5. gain skills pertaining to identification of plants, including use of a taxonomic key, a plant press, and various printed and electronic resources.

Grading (see Schedule for exam dates)*

Exams (lecture content, plant identification, and pronunciation of botanical names): 5 @ 100 points each

Letter grades will be determined at the end of the semester based on exam scores.

* If you have a documented disability and anticipate needing accommodations in this course, please make arrangements to meet with Dr. Graves during the first week of class. Ground Rules

  1. You are expected to participate from the beginning to the end of every class session. Arriving late or departing class early reduces learning and performance.
  2. Be ready to spend up to 3 hours (10 a.m. until 1 p.m.) outdoors every Wednesday. Dress appropriately, keep hydrated, and protect yourself from the sun.
  3. Keep the area where plant samples are displayed neat and clean. Watch for and obey signs posted in the area, particularly those that may be related to pesticide applications in greenhouses nearby.
  4. Use of all tobacco products is prohibited during class, indoors and outdoors.
