  3. General Information about the Methods of Evaluation.

Midterm and Final Exams: These exams will be noncomprehensive. They will be in-class exams, and you will be given the entire period to work on them. The exams will be primarily multiple-choice and/or short-answer. Exam questions will be based on information taken from the Foliage Plant Manual, as well as information presented exclusively in lecture and lab.

Plant Identification Quizzes: There will be eight plant identification quizzes given, and the highest seven will count toward the overall course grade. These plant identification quizzes are cumulative, i.e., you may be tested on any plant that already has been studied during any week of the course. The quizzes will take place at the beginning of the laboratory periods, and the dates for the quizzes are given above. The plant identification quizzes will consist of ten plants. Each of the ten plants will be worth up to four points if the correct family, genus, specific epithet, variety or cultivar (if applicable), and common name are correctly identified and correctly spelled and punctuated. There will be no makeup quizzes.

Plant Identification Final Examination: There will be one plant identification final examination, and this exam will be cumulative, i.e., you may be tested on any plant that has been studied during any week of the course. The plant identification final examination will consist of forty plants. Each of the forty plants will be worth up to four points if the correct family, genus, specific epithet, variety or cultivar (if applicable), and common name are correctly identified and correctly spelled and punctuated.

Lab Report: At the beginning of the semester, you will be assigned one plant to ``adopt'' for most of the semester. You will provide all care necessary to maintain the plant in a healthy condition. You will also keep a log book of all observations and actions taken with your assigned plant. Then, based on the information recorded in your log book, you will write a lab report that communicates what you learned from the experience. Detailed instructions are provided in Adopt-a-Plant (for the Semester), Log Book and Report on the Culture of an Interior Plant. Log book sheets are provided in this course packet.

Interiorscape Design Project: The purpose of the interiorscape design project is to give you the opportunity to apply what you've learned about foliage plants. Developing this project will require synthesis of disparate facts into a workable whole. The details of how to accomplish this project are presented in Design Project Guidelines and Interiorscape Design Project Evaluation Form.

Interiorscape Design Oral Report: Refer to Design Project Oral Presentation Guidelines and Design Project Oral Presentation Evaluation Form for specific instructions.

  4. Professionalism

In two short years or less you will be out in the real world. Much of your success in and satisfaction with your profession will be determined by your own good work habits. Your college experience provides you with the opportunity to establish and develop professional habits that will serve you well throughout your life. As such, a portion of your grade in this class will be determined by your performance in a category that we call professionalism. Your score in professionalism will be determined by the following behaviors:

Attendance: You are expected to attend all lecture and laboratory sessions. If you know ahead of time that you will have a conflict with a scheduled class session, please ask your academic advisor or relevant faculty member to provide me with written notice of your upcoming absence. If you are ill or have a personal emergency, please notify me as soon as possible that you are unable to attend class. For excused absences, you are required to present the instructor with written verification of the valid reason for your absence from class (e.g., doctor's note, pamphlet from the funeral, conference program, etc.).

Promptness: Arrive to class on time. Submit assignments on time.

Courtesy: Be polite and positive in your interactions with your classmates and the instructor.

Engagement: What you get out of this class will be proportional to the effort that you invest in this class.
