Objectives:

  1. To introduce students to the Department of Horticulture philosophy, faculty members, and major.
  2. To familiarize students with the policies, procedures and academic assistance that the university can offer.
  3. To formulate a resume and cover letter suitable for the major.
  4. To familiarize the students with the options and depth of the Horticulture major.
  5. To help students understand academic, career, and professional goals.
  6. To help students make the transition to college life.

Grading:

Orientation in Horticulture, Hort 110, is required for completion of the degree in Horticulture. The course is graded on the basis of a letter grade.

Attendance:

  • The student is required to attend ALL Hort. 110 class sessions including the two interdepartmental visits.
  • Attendance is required for all classes and will be taken at the beginning of the class period. If you enter the classroom after attendance was taken, it is YOUR responsibility to see me after class. Thank you for helping to avoid attendance errors.

Absence:

  • Attendance is critical for successful completion of the course. Absence from class due to death in the family, serious illness, severe winter weather, or at the discretion of the instructor may be considered valid excuses. If such emergencies occur, contact me before class time or if not possible soon after the missed class.
  • If I cannot be reached by phone or in person regarding the emergency, leave a message on my voice mail at 294-5624, or my cell phone at 515-450-1920. You may also leave a message in person with any of the secretaries in Room 106, Horticulture Hall. These systems and persons will document the time and date of the message.

Assignments:

The student is required to successfully complete all Hort 110 written assignments. You also will need to attend one Hort club meeting and one Turf club meeting during the semester. Don't forget to have your sheet signed by the president or one of the officers. You may turn in any assignments either in hard copy or email.

Common Reading Assignments - Reflection activities common reading (Nickel and Dimed)
Reflections and activities for Nickel and Dimed and Project Glean Service Learning activity due throughout the semester. Will be done primarily during our evening social meeting time.

Assignment #2 - Advisor Interview - Due by September 23 to Barb Osborn.
Get an appointment with him/her and have several interview questions prepared. The paper should be at least a page in length.

Assignment #3 - One Page Resume - Due October 7
You may email to Barb or hand in a hard copy.

Assignment #4 - Cover Letter - Due November 18
The cover letter should be addressed to a horticultural company of your choice. Please include the job description with your letter. Choose an internship or job that you would be interested in getting.

Assignment #5 -­Graduation Plan - Due November 11
The 4­year plan should be done on Excel and emailed or hard copy given to Barb. Work with your advisor on this project.

Assignment #6 - Attend one Hort Club and one Turf Club meeting. - Due
December 9 Use the papers attached to have an officer of the prospective groups sign and turn in by the due date. This is to assure that you have attended each of our departmental clubs to see if you would like to participate. I would encourage you to belong to at least one of the clubs if not both.
