What do students contribute to our Assessment?
As the primary "stakeholder" in our curriculum, students provide valued input in the assessment of learning. These items below allow us to document the ways in which learners contribute to curricular improvement and to document the achievement of learner outcomes:
Student knowledge of the principles, practices, and benefits of the assessment program
As our department continues to develop its outcomes assessment program,
we will communicate the elements of our plan to students in the
orientation class, Hort 110, so that they will be aware of its
importance from the time they enter the department until they graduate.
Students participation in the assessment program
Students provide informal feedback on outcomes assessment through
the coordinator of the Resource and Career Center. Graduating
seniors participate in a survey to assess leaner outcomes over the
course of their student career in the Department of Horticulture.
Students provide important data through evaluations at the end of
the semester in each course taught in the department. The Outcomes
Assessment Committee surveys students in Hort 497 (Professional
Development Seminar) during each spring semester. Students are
asked to rate the extent of coverage of each of our learner
outcomes over all courses.
Student involvement on assessment committees
Two students have been appointed to the Outcomes Assessment
Committee by the Department Chair. Appointment to the committee of
one or two undergraduate students has been approved by the
Department Chair, and selection of student representatives is
currently under consideration by the Outcomes Assessment Committee.
The student representatives have the same privileges and
responsibilities as the faculty representatives. The two students
appointed each year are the current presidents of Hort Club and
Turf Club.
